View from Moontower: John Mulaney

At the moment Comedy Moontower is operating on a dodgy Wi-Fi signal and a rather temperamental WordPress in the Esquire Lounge at the Stephen F. Austin hotel and in the midst of mad dash guest list requests for the forthcoming joy magnet that is tonight’s Steven Wright performance. Wanda Sykes and Marc Maron are chatting at the bar. Patrons are imbibing and buzzing. The Festival has been amazing and a heaping chunk of this… fuck it, I’m using “euphoria” unabashedly is from the abject afterglow of John Mulaney’s set last night and from the anticipation for another at the Parish tonight. As I started that last sentence, festival producer Rich Miller is in a booth exalting Mulaney to casting director Ann Maney. JR Brow and Lucas Molandes delivered command sets and I am hard-pressed to recall the last time I laughed out loud as hard and for as long I did at John Mulaney’s set– which began with approximately 15 minutes of him absolutely slaying by recounting how he and his girlfriend spent the day visiting Friday Night Lights’ locations. Before I could finish that sentence (and I shit thee nay), a VIP just lamented the woe (and embarrassment of Moontower riches) of having to miss Mulaney tonight for the must-see Steven Wright.

*A note to current and prospective badge holders. Single tickets will be available for each performance. The VIP badge grants you access to all performances, with no need to purchase an additional ticket. The “You Betcha I’m Somebody Pass” gives you access to each performance, except those at the Paramount. For Paramount shows, “You Betcha” badge holders will have pre-sale access allowing them to get a jump on the crowd for the big shows. The “You Betcha” badge, while giving you the most bang for your buck as a great overall value badge, gets you access to the shows after VIP badge and single ticket holders and does not guarantee admission. However, the Festival will hold a limited number of seats set aside for these badges at each show for those first in line, so early arrival is suggested. It is suggested that “You Betcha” badge holders also take advantage of the special benefit of exclusive pre-sale access to purchase single tickets to “must see” performances and ensure your entry.

To purchase tickets for individual performances as well as festival badges ($129) and VIP badges ($799), go to www.moontowercomedyfestival.com. You can also get them at the Paramount Theatre box office or by calling 512-474-1221. The box office is open Monday – Saturday 12pm – 5:30pm and is closed on Sundays. Moontower is proud to announce Andy Kindler, John Mulaney, W. Kamau Bell, Tom Rhodes, Holly Lorka, and Jonathan Pace to the lineup!

Andy Kindler

The brilliant and esteemed Andy Kindler is the personification of turning irritation into pearls of hilarity. A perennial Letterman and late night television favorite, Kindler is renown for his onstage takedown riffing which manages to simultaneously go for the jugular as well as reliably deliver hardcore belly laughs. His annual, no-holds-barred “State of the Industry” address at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival is always a must-see for fellow comics and Industry ilk.

John Mulaney

Fresh-faced and boyish (almost to the point of medical curio), comedian John Mulaney is presently surfing the stand-up stratosphere thanks to his recent one-hour COMEDY CENTRAL special “New In Town” and its CD/DVD release. Mulaney is also a writer on Saturday Night Live and his credits include co-creating the Stefon character played by Bill Hader.

W. Kamau Bell

W. Kamau Bell slew a packed Paramount Theatre on Nov 1, 2011, as part of Sarah Silverman’s historic “LIVE FROM N*****HEAD (Stripping The Paint Off Of Good Ol Fashioned Racism)” line-up. With two CDs, a panoply of TV credits, and his critically acclaimed one man show, “The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About and Hour,” Bell has garnered a growing legion of fans and endorsements by Robin Williams, Margaret Cho, and Marc Maron. Fans of Paul Mooney and Dave Chappelle won’t want to miss Bell’s return to Austin, TX.

Tom Rhodes

Well known to American and Dutch television audiences, Tom Rhodes is perhaps one of the most well traveled comedians. And the Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival is thrilled to feature this ever thoughtful and seasoned stand-up. The New York Times described him thusly; “Tom Rhodes is mostly a natural intellect with a knack for reporting the harsh realities of life with a dark and absurdly optimistic cynicism.”  We are not apt to disagree with the Old Gray Lady on this matter.

Holly Lorka

Holly has hit our River City stages like a never-ending roman candle. She has appeared in the movie “Cancerpants” and has performed at the 2011 Boston Comedy Festival. She was a finalist in the 2011 Funniest Person In Austin contest and has opened for Hal Sparks, Julie Goldman, Dana Goldberg, and Margaret Smith. Holly has also taken the stage for the Austin and Portland Gay Pride Festivals.

Jonathan Pace

Jonathan Pace is a rising Austin-based comic who has been featured in the Funniest Person in Austin contest and clubs like Cap City and the venerable Velveeta Room.

Stay tuned for more lineup announcements and exciting infotainment goodness. Moontower badges are available now at www.moontowercomedyfestival.com. Single tickets on sale Thursday, February 23rd.
