The New York Comedy Festival wrapped up with a bang recently. Along with a slew of giant names like Maher, C.K., Griffin, Sykes, Gervais, and more, there was a particular show that heralded the tragic passing of a gone-too-soon comedy great, Mike DeStefano.
The HIV positive DeStefano died of a heart attack last March, just days before he was to perform his one-man-show “A Cherry Tree in the Bronx.” Sober for 11 years, he was a cringe humor comic that also doubled as a drug counselor to fellow addicts. At NYCF, fellow comics Colin Quinn, Robert Kelly, Eugene Mirman and more paid to their late friend in a show that also featured rare footage of DeStefano as well as tributes from his friends & family.
